Writing letters to sponsors.

Secondary students (Grades 9-12) attend private boarding schools while school is in session. During holidays, they return to the MDP Education Centre. Some go home once or twice a year if it is safe and have a home to go to as this is now a mandate from the governor. When home, they are most prone to rape and some getting pregnant. In either case, it is devastating. Those who do get pregnant out of wedlock have a lower chance to getting married and are no longer able to continue their education. They are forced to go back to their village.

Sopei, age 13. Rescued on September 2023

At this stage, girls are married off unless rescued. Sopei, a recent rescued, is the 5th born in her mother’s house. Her father fell very sick after she was born, and eventually lost his eyesight, so her mother provides for the family. When Sopei’s mother found out that the father was making plans to have Sopei go through the FGM ceremony in preparation for selling her in marriage for a dowry of a cow. Her mother reported the situation to one of our MDP Lay Pastors, who in turn notified MDPEC Manager, James Nanka. James did an investigation and found the report to be true, he then notified the Narok Children’s Protection Office. Sopei was then assigned to live at the MDPEC, where she is safe and able to continue her education. Best of all, she is learning about Jesus’ love for her.
