MDP Education Centre
A Safe Place to Learn
In 2010, the Maasai Development Project Education Centre (MDPEC) was opened for vulnerable Maasai girls who were to undergo FGM and forced early childhood marriage. MDPEC provides a safe place to live and receive an education.
With poverty so great within the Maasai community, under-aged girls are given into marriage after going through the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) ceremony, usually by or before the age of 12 years. Maasai girls are traditionally married off in exchange for a dowry of cows.
MDP has established a home for rescued and at-risk orphans girls to live. Here they are given the opportunity to obtain an education. Many of the educated students return to their communities, helping to influence a healthier way of life in their families. Maasai communities celebrate their educated children.
MDPEC’s progressive programs, such as adult education classes, food sharing during times of drought, Medical mission trips, reach many parts of Maasailand.
